Step 1


If (AND ONLY IF!) a metal object is lodged in the scanner in a
way that poses serious threat to the subject, QUENCH the magnet
by pressing the EMERGENCY DISCHARGE button on the tan discharge
unit located in the magnet room above and to the right of the
sink:
Plug the unit into the electrical strip. Lift the clear plastic
cover and hold down the RED
BUTTON for 10 seconds.

Call 911. Describe the event. Give the location as:

Call the UCLA Page Operator (56301 or 310/825-6301 from an off-campus
phone) and ask to page the party on call for "Brain Mapping
MR Lab emergencies"

Step 5


If the emergency involves a subject in the magnet:

Press the EMERGENCY
STOP button on the console to abort the scan |

Grasp and turn the cradle
release handle, located at the foot end of the patient bed.
Pull the cradle all the way out onto the transport table.
Make certain that the cradle is fully retracted, or it will
not undock. |

Move the side rails of
the table into the vertical position |
| |
D. |
Undock the transport
by stepping on the "UNDOCK" foot pedal. |
| |
E. |
Keeping the subject on
the transport, wheel the patient table out of the scan room.

F. |
The crash cart is located
in the changing room, in front of the bathroom. |
Under no circumstances should a code
team enter the scan room.
Always remove the subject from the instrument first! Initiate
CPR if needed, and wait in the lab until the code team arrives.

If you are unable to get a direct response from Mark
Cohen, the following personnel should be notified (in order).
Keep trying until one of these individuals has been reached.
